Firefighters continue their pension fight

IMG_00000143York’s central fire station has seen two further nights of strike action this week. The government wants staff to work till they’re 63, and to lose their pension if the fail a medical. Many have paid higher contributions for years in order to retire when they need to. Instead, they face more years of inhaling poisonous smoke – many 63 year olds would struggle to carry an injured person to safety! Members of York People’s Assembly and Food Not Bombs delivered both moral and hot drink support. Both nights the strike was solid and determined. This is just one of several workplace struggles that look set to continue into next year, with more action to be announced next week.
