Speakers present a ‘Better Way’ for York

(Saturday March 8th) As the rally outside wound down, over 100 people gathered in nearby Friends Meeting House for a panel of 9 speakers brought together by York TUC and York People’s Assembly. It served as a counter-conference to the events at the city’s nearby Barbican Centre, where Nick Clegg rallied the Lib Dem party faithful.

Local vicar Father Tim Jones kicked off with a bleak overview of injustices faced by those he meets in his job. There were calls to keep the NHS public and renationalise Britain’s railways, alongside a Green Euro candidate and local Labour councillor. Sadly, due to an equipment failure, we couldn’t show local producer Cathy Denford’s new film “On the Edge” – look out for details of an future screening.

[Please note this piece is part of a catch-up which we’ll be doing over the next week]
