(Saturday March 8th) As the rally outside wound down, over 100 people gathered in nearby Friends Meeting House for a panel of 9 speakers brought together by York TUC and York People’s Assembly. It served as a counter-conference to the events at the city’s nearby Barbican Centre, where Nick Clegg rallied the Lib Dem party faithful. Continue reading
(Saturday March 8th) About 2,500 people gathered to deliver a message to the Lib Dem’s Spring Conference in York. The march began on the Eye of York, scene of many historic protests in the last 200 years, before heading past the Barbican Centre, scene of the conference. Despite many issues and groups taking part, there was a very clear over-arching rejection of austerity. Continue reading
On Friday 7th March, the TSSA and RMT rail unions welcomed visiting Lib Dems to York by calling for a commitment to “Keep East Coast Public”. Dozens of signs were held up with individual Lib Dem MPs names on, similar to “airport meet and greet” signs. However most ducked in to waiting taxis rather than allow themselves to be lobbied.
[Please note this piece is part of a catch-up which we’ll be doing over the next week]
We’re really busy this week with all sorts of preparations before the arrival of the Lib Dems in our city on Friday for their Spring Conference, and the huge march organised by the Yorkshire TUC the following day. Can you help with one of the following:
- Fliering commuters from 7.45 to 9.15am Wednesday, outside Aviva on Station Rise.
- Drop-in banner and placard making from 2.30pm to 9pm Thursday at TSSA offices.
- Handing out fliers and collecting email addresses on the day. Meet at the foot of Clifford’s Tower steps at 10.30am on Saturday.
The ‘Better World’ march, called by the TUC to confront the Lib Dem conference with a real alternative to austerity, is now just over a week away. We know that thousands of people have got the message, and we’re hearing of people travelling from across the North and even a minibus from Lewisham heading our way. But there’s still time to build a bigger turnout from York. Can you sign up to spend an hour one lunchtime handing out fliers in Coney Street? Continue reading
Many thanks to the team of 10 who delivered 3000 fliers to homes in the Bishophill and Clementhorpe areas of the city tonight. People came and went and, despite the cold, the streets were ticked off one by one. Its a big start to our mission to get invites in to thousands of letterboxes in the coming weeks. We’ll be fliering homes in the Groves on Tuesday and Holgate on Thursday next week: full details here.
Its just 4 weeks till the Lib Dems arrive in for their conference in York. Fancy lending a hand with spreading the word in neighbourhoods around the city? This Thursday (13th) York People’s Assembly are delivering fliers around Bishopthorpe Road, and we’d love to have extra pairs of hands! We’ll be outside Cycle Heaven from 5.30. From 6pm we’ll be opposite Sainsburys on the Scarcroft Road junction.
- Tuesday 18th: 6-7pm outside Punch Bowl/Independent, on the Haxby Road/Wigginton Road/Lowther St junction, to cover the Groves area.
- Thursday 20th: 6-7pm outside The Fox, Holgate Road/Acomb Road junction.
- Look out for more sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays around York.
