Anger and defiance at the prospect of five years of Tory government has resulted in us selling out two coaches for the 20th June ‘No More Austerity’ march and festival in London. We’re also raising money to cover publicity. Tickets now cost £25 or £15, get yours online now!
A number of people in York will have recently contacted Hugh Bayley MP to ask him to support the Early Day Motion (EDM) 438 sponsored by Geraint Davies MP. Thus far 73 MP’s of a mix of shades (other than Conservative) have put their names against it, but not our Hugh. Continue reading
York People’s Assembly are working with UNISON City of York branch to build a lunchtime march and rally on Tuesday 14th October in support of their strike action. Unions across the public sector are due to take part in strike action on 13th, 14th and 15th October. Healthworkers will lead the way on Monday 13th, with Council and College staff on strike on Tuesday 14th. Finally, civil servants will take action on Wednesday 15th. We’ll be standing on picket lines with all of them. Its all part of a week of action culminating in the “Britain Needs A Pay Rise” demonstration on Saturday 18th October. Coach tickets from York are available here.
On Saturday 18th October, the TUC will host the “Britain Needs A Payrise” march in central London. Thousands of workers, students, claimants and more will march together demanding an end to the widening gap between rich and poor. York TUC have organised a coach, and we’re asking everyone to buy a ticket and be part of this big pre-General Election push to get this issue heard. We can’t afford to have another election debate dictated by banks and high-earners.
People from many different local organisations, including York People’s Assembly, came together for a recent 38 Degrees day of action. The aim was to get people talking about TTIP – the trade deal threatening to kill off the NHS and all other public services. There was significant interest from passers by, with a good number signing the petition to request Vince Cable fix or scrap the Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP). The action was also covered by the York Press. (Thanks to Defend Our NHS York for parts of this report).
UKIP are planning for their annual conference at the end of September… and so are we. They’ve decided to make our lives a little easier by bringing it to Doncaster. As Britain faces the threat of growing right-wing militancy, we’re committed to meeting that threat as well as providing a serious alternative agenda. Activists in Doncaster have called a “Stand Up To UKIP” march on 27th September, and we want to help them give UKIP a right Yorkshire welcome! To get organised, there’ll be a quick meeting at 6.30pm on Monday right before the York People’s Assembly meeting.
Over the last two weeks, a band of campaigners have been on the march from Jarrow towards London. The march was planned by Darlo Mums, but has drawn hundreds to march and rally along the route. Last week the march visited Northallerton, Ripon (pictured), Harrogate and Leeds, with York People’s Assembly and Defend Our NHS York members taking part. On Saturday 6th September, the marchers have their grand entrance to London, with a final rally in Trafalgar Square at 3.30pm.
