A team of TTIP campaigners hung a huge banner off two York bridges during Saturday. Rachel Maskell helped us unfurl the banner on Lendal Bridge for half an hour, before we moved over to Ouse Bridge. Passengers on river tours waved and we gathered signatures from passers-by and punters outside the famous King’s Arms. The same banner has been appearing around Britain, with its simple “Hands Off Democracy” message. Continue reading
The Stop TTIP petition was the focus of our action on Tuesday, 21 July from 11am to 2pm in St Helen’s Square, York. At least a dozen of us shared the task of publicising the dangers of this US/EU deal and getting passers-by to sign. To catch the public’s attention, a giant inflatable pencil dominated the Mansion House end of the square. Hazel Palmer reports… Continue reading
Members of local campaign group York Unity are looking for extra help spreading the message about the UKIP threat. They’ve got 8000 flyers to hand out, starting with an event in St Helen’s Square from 12 to 2pm on Saturday 10th May.
Recently, thousands of UKIP’s own fliers were returned to their Freepost address by angry voters. But the party looks set to win the UK vote in this month’s European Elections. They stand a chance because many simply won’t show up to the polls to vote, resulting in Britain being represented by allies of tax dodgers and racists, rather than defenders of workplace rights and the environment.
We’re really busy this week with all sorts of preparations before the arrival of the Lib Dems in our city on Friday for their Spring Conference, and the huge march organised by the Yorkshire TUC the following day. Can you help with one of the following:
- Fliering commuters from 7.45 to 9.15am Wednesday, outside Aviva on Station Rise.
- Drop-in banner and placard making from 2.30pm to 9pm Thursday at TSSA offices.
- Handing out fliers and collecting email addresses on the day. Meet at the foot of Clifford’s Tower steps at 10.30am on Saturday.
The ‘Better World’ march, called by the TUC to confront the Lib Dem conference with a real alternative to austerity, is now just over a week away. We know that thousands of people have got the message, and we’re hearing of people travelling from across the North and even a minibus from Lewisham heading our way. But there’s still time to build a bigger turnout from York. Can you sign up to spend an hour one lunchtime handing out fliers in Coney Street? Continue reading
Many thanks to the team of 10 who delivered 3000 fliers to homes in the Bishophill and Clementhorpe areas of the city tonight. People came and went and, despite the cold, the streets were ticked off one by one. Its a big start to our mission to get invites in to thousands of letterboxes in the coming weeks. We’ll be fliering homes in the Groves on Tuesday and Holgate on Thursday next week: full details here.
