More than 20 people from a range of organizations, including York People’s Assembly, ignored the sunny weather to gather at the Friends’ Meeting House in York at 10:30 on Saturday 18 April and hear about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and discuss the issues surrounding it with three people who had attended a recent protest in Brussels outside the European Parliament. At 11:20 we had the pleasure of Richard Corbett MEP, one of the two Labour Members of the European Parliament for Yorkshire & the Humber describe the history and background of TTIP followed by answering a wide range of questions for the next seventy minutes.

Several dozen people from a variety of campaigns around York gathered in King’s Square York from 12 midday to warn people against a major trade deal being negotiated between the United States and the EU, which protesters say threatens democracy, the environment, and public services including the NHS. What is the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) ?
The TTIP is a scheme organized by international big business to gain access to public budgets. It’s a trade treaty that is being negotiated in secret between the European Union (EU) and The United States of America (US), and what knowledge there is of negotiations comes from leaked papers.

Multinational corporations are looking to take over our National Health Service (NHS) and they could be helped by a new trade treaty being discussed at the EU, the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP).
Defend Our NHS York are hosting an event with Linda Kauchuer, an expert on International Trade and Law on 1st May, 7- 9pm, where she’ll explain and lead a discussion TTIP and the negative impact it will have on our NHS. The meeting venue is The Main Hall, Friends Meeting House (Map location B). Furthur information about TTIP and the meeting is available is available on the Defend Our NHS York website.
Once these fat cats get their claws into our NHS, they will simply tear it apart.
